Veteran’s Day and My Obsession with US Special Forces…

Veteran’s Day and My Obsession with US Special Forces…

Today is Veteran’s Day – one of my top favorite holiday’s of the year. It is a great opportunity to slow down our busy lives and thank those who fought for the freedom we enjoy. Too many people can’t relate to the horror they went through, the pain, struggle, and emotions of war. However all of us should tell them thank you and spend time remembering those who gave their lives. THANK YOU to all those who fight for our country and have served in our military to give us what we have today!

I must admit I have a unique fascination with the United States Special Forces. Since I spend so much time working with business mindsets and leadership skills, I admire and respect their approach to mental mastery and perfection. I am humbled at what these soldiers do for our country; and in most cases what they do without recognition. The secret missions that ODA teams, DELTA operators, SEALS, and Rangers perform are highly secretive and very dangerous. In fact, if one of them ends up loosing their life during one of these missions, it’s rare that they will ever be mentioned for the mission they gave their life for. I admire these people. Today, I’d like to show you one of my favorite videos online. It’s a special done by National Geographic that shows what life is like inside the Green Beret’s deployed in Afghanistan. Enjoy!

On this Veteran’s Day, I hope you can thank each and every one of those who have served and continue to think of those serving today. God bless them.

In Honor of Amanda JoLynn Peebles

My experience is like all too many others who have gone through this with cancer. I write about it because I hope that it will help motivate others to get involved, to make a difference and to be there for kids with cancer. However, I cannot even begin to claim an experience like those who have parented these amazing kids or those who endured so much more. My story about Amanda is just my experience and I hope that by writing this out I can encourage others to spend a little more time with their kids and helping those who battle cancer. It’s a small story in a world that is full of very strong people. I love and respect Amanda’s family and hope that I will always be a positive source of strength for them.

It is so hard to say goodbye to someone…to know that their journey on this earth has ended. It’s even more difficult when it’s a 12 year old beautiful girl who has fought for her life every day for the last 3 years. So, it’s taken me awhile to recount my experience with Amanda and the last few days I saw her. I will do my best to do that now; I’m ready to tell the world about this Angel among us.

Amanda JoLynn Peebles was one of the strongest fighters cancer has ever known. She underwent two bone marrow transplants, chemotherapy, side effects, constant vomiting, and so much more. She fought for almost 3 years. I am fortunate to know many of these amazing childhood cancer heroes and by far Amanda’s story was plagued with some of the worst conditions, but she always had the best attitude. She was always happy.

My experience with her was only a small portion of her life and I am one of hundreds that she touched in a very magical, heartfelt way. But I can tell you that every moment I shared with her was incredible. From the time we went swimming at the Broomfield Recreation Center, to the two hour browsing experience in Toy’s R Us, it was all perfect. Amanda was so funny; she would love to watch others fall – and she would let out a laugh that you’d never forget. I remember one time I left the hospital to get her Burger King for dinner, and when I returned she was mid-conversation with someone on the phone. As she continued her conversation for 20 minutes I kept wondering who she was talking to. She finally hung up and started laughing hysterically; turns out she had been doing a series of prank phone calls with our friend Kennedy (who was also at the hospital) and had continued the ruse for almost 30 minutes. Amanda was one of a kind. She was so beautiful! Every picture I ever saw of her she was the most beautiful 12 year old, and her eyes and smile told a story. I only hope that as my life continues on that I can share her story with as many people as possible to let her fight be known, to let her experience continue to change the lives of others forever. It is impossible to write the many experiences I got to have with her; maybe someday I can in detail. As I think back, I am so lucky to be given the gift of knowing her.

I was fortunate to be in Denver 2 days before she passed. I caught a flight from San Diego and the following morning rushed to the hospital when ICU visiting hours opened. She was in bad shape when I arrived that morning but I got to spend some time with her and held her hand while nurses had to take care of her. I got to sit in the room for most of the day all the way till 7PM and while I sat there Amanda slept but would open her eyes every 30 minutes to check and see if I was still sitting there. I really felt like I was one of the luckiest people in the world to get to spend so much time with her so close to her departure from this earth. The next day, Friday, I went to the hospital in the evening and it was then that people were saying goodbye to her. I took a small turn and went into the ICU and sat near her bed. I went to talk to her and found myself unable to say anything. I couldn’t figure out what to say – holding back tears I finally was able to tell her thank you. I said thank you for the best times in my life, thank you for being such a great friend, and I told her that I would do anything to help her family and friends. I told her she was strong and I will always remember her strength. That was it – I ran out of words…so I spent the next several minutes just being with her and then left the ICU room so that others could say their goodbyes. I am strong during all this but at this moment I finally had reached my low – I was saying goodbye to one of my best friends. A girl who I had watched fight for her life every day. I owe a special Thank You to David, one of my close friends, for putting up with my breakdown when I left the ICU. This was the only time I’ve lost it around kids with cancer.

Amanda passed away Saturday evening at 6:45 PM on August 14th, 2010. I received a text message from Stacy that invited me down to the hospital that evening around 8PM. Amanda had been moved earlier that day to the 7th Floor (Oncology at Children’s Hospital) and I was able to see her family and hug Jayden (Amanda’s little brother), Tionna (Amanda’s older sister), Michelle (Amanda’s Mom), and Arlando (Amanda’s father). It was a time I will never forget. I was able to spend some time with Amanda and her family that night and she looked so peaceful, so beautiful. Her fever was finally gone, her fight was over, she no longer had sickness overtaking her body, she was free. It was reliving, but it was painful.

Her service was amazing – the perfect way to honor such an incredible god-given girl. I was really glad to be able to be around Donavan (Amanda’s boyfriend) who is also battling cancer. He is now one of my new friends in this world of cancer. I got to go up with Donavan to light a candle in Amanda’s memory. Amanda also had the gift of having one of the largest funeral processions I have ever seen. She was escorted by over 9 motorcycle police officers who led an uninterrupted procession to the cemetery. I was so glad that people all over Broomfield, Colorado could hear the sirens of her journey to her burial site.

That night I left Denver and flew to New York City (on a red-eye) for my brother’s Ring Weekend Ceremony at West Point and it finally all set-in. I was grieving the loss of one of the most incredible spirits I have ever met in my life. It will be a very long time before I am over this loss, but I know one thing for certain…I am the luckiest person alive to have been in her life. I thank God everyday for introducing me to her. I remember a lot of times as I would leave Amanda’s hospital room, she would mouth the words, “I love you”. Now, every day I look to the heavens and mouth the words “I love you Amanda” hoping she will hear me and know how thankful I am to have been a friend in her life.

A Quick Update on the Past Month!

It’s been so long since I’ve updated. Here are some highlights –

My brother from West Point finished his 3 week training course in urban warfare and several other categories spending nights in fox-holes and mortar attacks. For that reason alone when he flew out to San Diego we had reason to celebrate. We spent 2 weeks driving up the West coast. From San Diego we went to Los Angeles, Malibu, and stayed in Point Mugu (Navy Base north of Malibu) and then continued on to Monterey seeing Julia Pfeiffer State Park (AWESOME!!) and staying over in San Jose, CA. We continued on for the next two weeks going to Crater Lake, Oregon Coast, Coos Bay, Lincoln City, Tukwila, and Seattle. We flew home from Seattle but I must say, I saw the most incredible scenery ever for those two weeks. It was really one of the best experiences of my life. Pictures are coming soon (I have to find the best out of 2,900 of them! Haha).

SMG is continuing its growth bringing on new projects and opportunities. I am working on an amazing assessment for corporate leadership to discover how much their people’s mindset affects the outcomes of their efforts. Until now, the minds influence on sales, operations, and business development has been fairly hidden when it’s been a major element for a long time. I have had some personal breakthroughs that have helped me reach new levels of achievement and someday I hope to lay out these changes for you to read.

The Miracle Party is going perfect. I was so lucky (I seem to have a lot of these moments in my life) to get to be in the Studio at 107.1 recording a 30 minute PSA for the MP with Kennedy (OH MAN, Love this girl), Julie, Stacy, Allison, and Krystal (my new DJ friend from 107.1, GREAT GIRL!). Kennedy broke my heart sharing her perspective of her journey with Cancer, and Julie made me tear up talking about her journey with Kayla. I am just so glad to know these people.

San Diego has been hitting new lows lately (temperature wise) and I must say, it needs to stop! LOL I moved here for the weather number one. I am hopefully going to get some beach time in this weekend before heading out next week to Denver again. This time my roommate and I are going to drive. We are attending my bother Jason’s wedding! It’s time to make history with the most unique wedding ever!

Well this is about it. Until next time!

My Update – Life’s Good!

Hello again – I know it’s been so long since I’ve posted any update. Let’s just say I’ve been buried in work. I haven’t even gotten to focus on a lot of growth with Childhood Cancer which says something about my last few months.

So, allow me to report in:

I met with CureSearch both in Washington, DC and Arcadia, CA. I met some amazing people. While I have yet to understand the depth of what CureSearch does, I feel convinced that they are the leaders in the pursuit for cures with Childhood Cancer diseases. I will have more information as my alignment with them progresses.

The past several weeks I’ve been doing a lot of selling and consulting with my day job, SMG. We announced a new web site (http://www.smgconsults.com) and we are bringing on several new projects that make me particularly happy. After six months of difficult projects, I’m refreshed to say that I can finally enjoy my day job again.

I’ve been staying home for several weeks which also makes me happy – I’m working on my tan in San Diego. Recently I learned that applying SPF 55 sun tan lotion only to the shoulders will make the top half appear white as ever, and your burn mark will look hilarious. I love San Diego especially when the 5 colleges get out and the beaches get packed!

I am working on finishing up a course for families affected by Childhood Cancer. It’s a simple course, but full of tools that help them release trauma, shift their mindset, and help them get a little bit of sanity. It’s based on the courses I do for leadership development during the day at SMG. As soon as this is finished I will post more information.

The Miracle Party 2010 is coming up fast – I’ve been working with volunteers of that foundation to help plan this year’s event (which will be incredible). This year they have grown in volunteers to literally over 100. I’m so inspired by this non-profit. Every new non-profit has it’s struggles, and you’d be surprised how cutthroat it is out there – the Miracle Party Foundation is great because other than their annual party, they are all about helping other foundations showcase what they are about to the community of Childhood Cancer.

And, yes I’m still enjoying the single life – TMI? It’s hard to find the perfect girl when you spend so much time working, but I’m to the point now in my life that I’m open to the idea. So, whoever she is, and wherever she is – I’m looking forward to finding her.

Ok, enough about me – I’m signing off now, hope all of you are doing excellent.

DC for the Weekend!

I got to visit DC this weekend with my hero brother from West Point! He’s on exchange at Navy Annapolis and man did we have a blast. We ate ourselves stupid, did hikes in Marylands beautiful Spring and of course I fit in a few key meetings! :-)

What a fun weekend!

WMC/Ultra Music Festival in Miami, FL

Every year I attend Winter Music Conference (WMC) and Ultra Music Festival in Miami. This year was incredible – the weather in Miami was in the 80′s and I got to actually relax. I was a panelist at the two previous conferences; this year I decided I was going to go and have some fun.

Over 50,000 people attend Ultra Music Festival. I enjoyed seeing ATB, David Guetta, Above and Beyond, and so many more International dance music DJs.

Check out the picture gallery below. Miami is a very exciting place to visit, drastically different from the beach towns of San Diego. If you get a chance, go visit!

Denver again!

Well it’s time once again to make the trek out of beautiful San Diego and into snowy Denver. After being stuck in the DC blizzard a few weeks ago it can’t be that bad, right? For those of you who don’t know… I used to live in Denver – I have many memories there. One of my favorites is the Miracle Party Foundation. I will be meeting with it’s founder, Stacy Moriarty to see how this year’s event is coming along. I will also get the incredible opportunity to spend some time with Amanda at The Denver Children’s Hospital.

Colorado is also one of three leading states in starting a statewide Childhood Cancer Coalition. For the first time in Colorado history, the top childhood cancer charities come together once a month to discuss how they can work together to have the most impact while contributing towards national efforts. The two ladies that founded the Pediatric Task Force (C4 – Colorado Childhood Cancer Coalition) are phenomenal. You will be hearing more about this as myself and another national leader are in a discovery process with the other states and national foundations.

For those of you who live in Denver – hit me up! I’ll be there this weekend through next week. Let’s hope that it’s sunny and not East Coast Washington DC blizzard all over again!
